About the Program

Created in 1984, the Dali Museum Junior Docent Program is a summer camp offered to children 9 to 12 years of age. The Junior Docents are trained in a one-week session where they receive personal attention as they learn about the collection. This program concludes with a Friday afternoon tour and reception where the children get to share their knowledge of Dali and his paintings with the public. Junior docents are encouraged to put the information in their own words, helping them to appreciate art in new ways. They participate in fun, surreal-inspired activities; and they make new friends.

Ultimately, the Dali Junior Docent Program benefits students by building self-esteem, enhancing their speaking skills, providing opportunities to verbalize personal choices, and bringing families into the museum to share in the students' accomplishments.

Instructors

The program is administered by Pinellas County visual arts teachers working with the Dali Education team.

In addition, The Dali Museum is currently collaborating with the USF Department of Psychiatry in order to document how the Junior Docent Program assists in the development of children’s self-esteem and ability to learn.

The collaboration requires statistical information about the children's self-concept by administering a 20 question survey at the beginning and end of the program. The short survey is administered in groups by the visual art instructors.
