Dali & Beyond Film Series: The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb - David Borthwick
May 25, 2013 (Saturday)
Dali & Beyond Film Series: Stop Motion Ani-MAY-tion

A dark, twisted, yet enchanting version of the classic fairy tale. Set in a world of dark and shadowy tenements, shining high-tech labs and septic landscapes of garbage and ruins, The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb makes a touching her of the tiny child mysteriously born to a woman and man in the seediest part of town. Tiny Tom is snatched by sinister forces for evil experiments in a lab full of mutant creatures. He narrowly escapes into a world where he finds companionship with people his own size and starts to fight back against the 'giants' alongside Jack the Giant Killer. Nothing is likely to prepare you for your entry into the astonishing timeless world created by bolexbrothers' director David Borthwick, where strange humans are animated, latex figures breathe as if alive and objects and odd creatures crinkle and crunch in the corner. It's a world of genuine horror and moving moments that has the power to unsettle and enchant in equal measure. (1995, 70 min., DVD; NR probably R).

Film Screening: The Way of Saint James
May 25, 2013 (Saturday)
Over the lovely "Camino de Santiago", the Way of St. James, which is the ancient route leading from the Pyrenees to the famous and ancient shrine of Santiago de Compostela, this documentary follows the journey of several pilgrims who differ in culture and religious faith, united only by a mysterious attraction towards the same spiritual destination.

Across breathtaking landscapes, we experience a journey that is at once concrete, mystical and metaphorical in a continued alternation between past and present, between the history and legends that have fashioned the destiny of the Way of St. James. This ancient route that concludes at the shrine where St. James the Apostle is buried is the most famous Christian pilgrimage in the world. Now you can take this ancient journey through this beautifully produced film. -Amazon (2010, DVD, 105 min., NR)

Dali & Beyond Film Series: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
June 8, 2013 (Saturday)
Having proven itself as a favorite film of children around the world, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is every bit as entertaining now as it was when originally released in 1971. There's a timeless appeal to Roald Dahl's classic children's novel, which was playfully preserved in this charming musical, from the colorful carnival-like splendor of its production design to the infectious melody of the "Oompah-Loompah" songs that punctuate the story. It's the story of the impoverished Charlie Bucket, who, along with four other kids and their parental guests, wins a coveted golden ticket to enter the fantastic realm of Wonka's mysterious confectionery. After the other kids have proven themselves to be irresponsible brats, it's Charlie who impresses Wonka and wins a reward beyond his wildest dreams. But before that, the tour of Wonka's factory provides a dazzling parade of delights, and with Gene Wilder giving a brilliant performance as the eccentric candyman, Wonka gains an edge of menace and madness that nicely counterbalances the movie's sentimental sweetness. It's that willingness to risk a darker tone--to show that even a wonderland like Wonka's can be a weird and dangerous place if you're a bad kid--that makes this an enduring family classic. -Jeff Shannon (Stuart, 1971; 100 min; rated G)

The three main characters are important Spanish figures - Salvador Dali, poet Federico Garcia Lorca and filmmaker Luis Bunuel - who met as students at the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. Dali, Lorca and Bunuel defied their society's politics and forged new ground during a time when being an artist was revolutionary - and being a gay or bisexual artist was dangerous. Together, these distinct personalities learn from each other and develop a complex new language about the nature of art. (2008, 112 minutes, directed by Paul Morrison and starring Robert Pattinson)

Dali & Beyond Film Series: Un Chien Andalou + Simon of the Desert
July 4, 2013 (Thursday)
Un Chien Andalou remains a startling artifact suggesting ways in which film can express the subconscious. The result of Luis Bunuel's collaboration with Salvador Dali, the 17-minute, 1929 film was designed expressly to shock and provoke. Opening with the canonical eyeball-slashing sequence and divided into baffling "chapters", this is a work of art obsessed with religion, lust, decay, violence, and death. Un Chien Andalou isn't simply one of the great works of the surrealist movement, but a segment of cinematic DNA that irrevocably altered the aesthetics of film. -Ryan Boudinot (Bunuel & Dali, 1929; 17 min; Not Rated)

Simon of the Desert is Luis Bunuel's wicked and wild take on the life of devoted ascetic Saint Simeon Stylites, who waited atop a pillar surrounded by a barren landscape for six years, six months, and six days, in order to prove his devotion to God. Yet the devil, in the figure of the beautiful Silvia Pinal, huddles below, trying to tempt him down. A skeptic's vision of human conviction, Bunuel's short and sweet satire is one of the master filmmaker's most renowned works of surrealism. -Amazon (Bunuel, 1965; 45 min; Spanish with English subtitles; Not Rated)

Dali & Beyond Film Series: Viridiana
July 6, 2013 (Saturday)
Banned in Spain and denounced by the Vatican, Luis Bunuel's hilarious vision of life as a beggar's banquet is regarded by many as his masterpiece. In it, the young novice Viridiana does her utmost to maintain her Catholic principles, but her lecherous uncle and a motley assemblage of paupers force her to confront the limits of her idealism. Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival, this anticlerical free-for-all is as shocking today as ever. -Amazon (Bunuel, 1962; 90 min; Spanish with English subtitles Not Rated)

Dali & Beyond Film Series: Jamon, Jamon
July 27, 2013 (Saturday)
Class, sex, and food are the obsessions of this Spanish comedy drama, an international hit from writer and director J.J. Bigas Luna that plays like a cross between the lusty Like Water for Chocolate (1992) and the early work of Pedro Almodovar. In a small town in Spain's arid Monegros region, young underwear factory executive Jose Luis (Jordi Molla) falls in love with the beautiful Silvia (Penelope Cruz), a worker on the shop floor. Film Screening: The Way of Saint James
July 27, 2013 (Saturday)

Dali & Beyond Film Series: Dali - Tragic-Comic Genius

Having constantly continued to construct his image and orchestrate the presentation of his work and his persona, Salvador Dali is one of the most popular artists of the 20th century. The DVD explores, through Francois Levy-Kuentz's film and a large proportion of the audiovisual archives presented with the Centre Pompidou exhibition, the many faces of this artist still held in the collective imagination. Dali & Beyond Film Series: The Day the Earth Stood Still
August 3, 2013 (Saturday)
A hallmark of the science fiction genre as well as a wry commentary on the political climate of the 1950s, The Day the Earth Stood Still is a sci-fi movie less concerned with special effects than with a social parable. A spacecraft lands in Washington, D.C., carrying a humanoid messenger from another world (Michael Rennie) imparting a warning to the people of Earth to cease their violent behavior. But panic ensues as the messenger lands and is shot by a nervous soldier. His large robot companion destroys the Capitol as the messenger escapes the confines of the hospital. He moves in with a family as a boarder and blends into society to observe the full range of the human experience. Director Robert Wise (West Side Story) not only provides one of the most recognizable icons of the science fiction world in his depiction of the massive robot loyal to his master, but he avoids the obvious camp elements of the story to create a quiet and observant story highlighting both the good and the bad in human nature. -Robert Lane (Wise, 1951; 92 min; rated G)
